Vancouver Chinatown

I had to be at Chinese school everyday at 4:30 — It was at the corner of Pender and Gore Ave. I snuck into class as the bell went off making certain that I would find a seat near the back. Had to do that so the boys would leave me alone.  Can’t have them dunging my pigtails into black ink again – Gosh, boys can be a real pain. I turned when someone tapped me on the shoulder and then the teacher said loudly as she pointed at me and said, “You, did you do your homework yesterday?” I stood up and nodded yes, “She said, “okay, read the first line.”  I started to say, Sieu, sieu mew,” and then a loud siren filled the room.  Several students ran to the wide open window to look down behold to see what all the commotion was about. There was a fire engine truck and an ambulance and there was someone on a gurney I couldn’t see his face clearly but a chill ran up my spine I remember thinking that I hope it’s not someone I know. But not to worry because as I returned to my seat after the teacher ordered us to, I was shocked to find dead crickets there and screamed.
