Don’t be mislead.

America is the land of the free, and yet there are over 18,000 people trapped here in slavery.   How can that be when we are the most prosperous nation in the world?  Slaves come from all over the world but the majority of them are from China, Africa. Mexico and even Vietnam.  What makes this so frightening is that you can be totally unaware of what you are getting yourself into.  Tran of Vietnam just wanted a better life for her husband and children and the only way to do that was get a job as a housemaid in America Samoa. The requirements was for her to live there for two years but she had to pay $5,000 up front first for the position.  It appeared like an easy enough job and when she returned she would be $20,000 richer.    But when she got there, the work wasn’t what she was promised.  Tran was continuously verbally abused, beaten if the two children didn’t behave and often raped by the Master of the house and the mistress not caring made it impossible to stay.  Being denied enough food, just given meager portions of rice and cabbage, she got desperate.  Now all Tran could think of was escape but there was no way out.  After a year and losing hope, the cook told her she was working uncover for a local church and with the assistance of other good Samaritans, she was finally free and able to return home.
